A Fistfull

Yep, 2009 is the year of the Ox, and also the year that A Fistful Of Records celebrates its five year anniversary. That means paaaaaaaaaaaaarty !!! So on saturday March 14th we have a totally mad outburst of Fistful mayham, right at the heart of it all, dB’s club in Utrecht, NL. First of all there’s gonna be a gig of Cheap Time, starring Jeffrey Novak (who made his debut on Fistful back in 2005), on gtr + vox ! We’re also very pleased to welcome our friends Polar Strong from France, who come all the way from Bordeaux driving up to Holland just to be able to play with their heroes of Cheap Time. Arriving on their bikes are localsEl Zombie, still going stronger, giggin’, boozin’ & just zombyin’ around.... Flying in from downtown Sheffield, England are The Hipshakes, and guess what, their bass player Andrew is a real 100 % Proto Idiot so he’s just gonna do a solo gig under that moniker. From Amsterdam we have turbo red-light-district
speedking rockerss Anomalys, plus there’s a real bunch of dj’s showing up, Pete Slovenly being one of them. Anyway, don’t miss it, be there and bring all your ugly friends too ! This may well be Holland’s garage event of the year..... Other attractions include an exhibition of blow-ups of Fistful and dB’s artwork by Joan van der Werf, and a brand new 7 inch from Madison, Whizzconsin’ rockerz The Hussy ! More about that one soon.
De instore van La Caravane Passe op vrijdag 6 maart gaat helaas niet door. Wel gewoon 's avonds in EKKO...

PVC in his punk-rock incarnation

Re-issue Rodriguez next May

Light in the Attic to Reissue Rodriguez's Coming From Reality

More good news for lovers of quality folk rock. Rodriguez's second album, 1971's Coming From Reality, will get Light in the Attic's deluxe reissue treatment May 5. Also, the Detroit troubadour will be touring the UK, Europe, and North America this year; plus, a Swedish company is filming a documentary on the man.
Press release after the cut.
"Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour"

RODRIGUEZ - COMING FROM REALITY OUT MAY 5TH, 2009 ON LIGHT IN THE ATTIC
Back in 1971, Coming From Reality was Rodriguez’s last gasp, the follow-up to Cold Fact and the final album he was allowed to record for the Sussex label. Unearthed, once again by Light In The Attic records, it’s another treat for fans new and old, designed - at the time - as Rodriguez’s vision of a perfect pop album.
Coming From Reality found Rodriguez decamping from Detroit to London’s Lansdowne Studios, where the album was recorded with some of the UK’s top talent including Chris Spedding (Sex Pistols, Dusty Springfield, Harry Nilsson) and producer Steve Rowland (The Pretty Things, PJ Proby and the man who discovered The Cure), who recalls Coming From Reality as his all time favorite recording project.
Highlights include the super-poppy To Whom It May Concern, the Rocky Raccoon-inspired A Most Disgusting Song and period piece Heikki's Suburbia Bus Tour. The reissue also includes three previously unreleased bonus tracks recorded in Detroit in 1972 with Cold Fact collaborators Mike Theodore & Dennis Coffey, representing the last thing the trio ever did together.
Meanwhile, the Rodriguez story keeps gathering pace. A Swedish film company is working on a feature length documentary about the enigmatic performer’s music and life. Rodriguez is planning to bring his live show to the UK and Europe come Spring/Summer 2009, along with further North American touring.
“It's an extraordinary trip,” says Rodriguez of his new lease on life. “It feels like Picasso, Monet. All these exciting new thoughts coming at me. It's global. I'm lucky to have this second chance. It's very real and totally unexpected.”
Sixto Rodriguez, then. Still coming from reality, and bigger than ever before

Glam

Wheels On Fire instore Plato Utrecht

25 februari Wheels on Fire instore: Wheels on Fire, a four-piece band from Ohio (USA), has been described as Elvis Costello meets the Stooges. After touring Europe and the US extensively, Wheels on Fire locked themselves in their basement with a couple microphones and a tape machine to record the songs that had materialized on the road. In the summer of 2008, they played a show with Jack Oblivion and gave him a copy of the new home recordings, which he then passed on to the famed Bruce Watson at Fat Possum Records. A compilation of these songs, titled GET FAMOUS!, is now available on Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum Records. With no bass player, the band’s rhythm section relies instead on Matt Chaney’s primal drumbeats and Susan Musser’s wailing keys to build a frenzied, rhythmic scream. Mike Chaney and John Garris add to the howling with their blistering guitars and dual lead vocals as they sing songs about sex, UFOs and the teenage blues. Honing their live shows in support of acts such as King Kahn and the Shrines, Jack-O and The Tennessee Tearjerkers, Rivercity Tanlines and the Reigning Sound, Wheels on Fire has emerged as a razor sharp, blood letting rock’n’roll machine. Wheels on Fire will be touring Europe and the US all of 2009.

Q: What happens at the record fair?

A: A lot of men venture further from their goal of having plentiful sex by looking for records that quite often sing about plentiful sex.
